"These stories have been written for Penelope, so that she may love the fairies, and keep the sunbeam always in her heart." - Mrs. Rodolph Stawell, Fairies I Have Met
The enchanting book "Fairies I Have Met" by Mrs. Rodolph Stawell was illustrated by the great Edmund Dulac* and published by John Lane in London, in this first UK edition from 1907. It is very rare and a very hard to obtain Dulac title!
Mrs. Stawell wrote these tales for a little girl named Penelope.
The stories about fairies and childhood wowed and inspired many children and adults throughout the decades and they still spark the imagination of everyone, who reads Stawells' beautiful and melancholy written verses and who lays their eyes on Dulacs' magical drawings.
The book is illustrated with eight color plates by Edmund Dulac* (1882-1953), one of the premier illustrators of the golden age of childrens' books. He was born in Toulouse and studied art in France. Dulac further became a british citizen in 1912 and is, perhaps, best known for his illustrations of different kinds of fairies. Reviewed in the British journal "Outlook" in November 1907, the reviewer highlighted the detailed and whimsical illustrations and his bold design. Dulac took inspiration from textile design and Japanese prints to depict the vibrant stories.
The condition of this gem is good, in original binding, with some wear, scratches, cracks and rubbing to the edges and the front and light colour fading on the front cover and cracks on the spine and binding. Nevertheless, beautiful and complete and waiting to astound and enchant the next child or youthful adult. :-)
