Jules Verne wrote this adventuresque novel (english title: "Family without a name") about the tumultuous life of a canadian family, during the Canadian Patriots' Rebellion against the British forces in 1837/1838.
In this story, a man named Morgaz, extradites the patriotic leaders (who want to establish a french oriented, sovereign managed state) to the british oriented government troops, for 50.000 dollars.
Following these events, he is banished and has to flee with his wife and their two sons. From now on, they have to live a life on the run, which leads the father into his ruin. 
A little time later, a new nameless hero is leading the rebels into a new fight and his brother, a cleric, is using his privileges to shake the battle-weary rebel troops up... maybe to pay off some personal debt ?
They have to face many troubles and obstacles as the fighting goes on and their story takes a dramatic turn...
 
Jules Verne has drawn up a complex, thrilling plot and (what is the case for many of his stories) throws light on an historic event, that is not commonly mentioned in european history classes and offers some new perspectives, even to those, who are already further educated in the matter of world history. 
 
Still in good condition, this volume was charmingly designed by Pierre-Jules Hetzel in Paris, but shows signs of the books' age and use. The colours on the spine have faded and the binding is a little loose. There are some bumps, stains and cracks on the spine, cover, front and back. The pages show some foxing, there are a few loose pages and cracks, but the inner book is otherwise in good condition. It is decorated with 82 illustrations and one geographical card, beautifully made by G. Tiret-Bognet. Published for the first time in 1889. 
 
An overall still beautiful edition of this piece of classic literature, with a slightly faded shine, but filled with a fascinating story, written by one of the most popular storytellers of all time.
