“Love all, trust a few,
Do wrong to none: be able for thine enemy
Rather in power than use;
and keep thy friend
Under thy own life's key:
be check'd for silence,
But never tax'd for speech.”― William Shakespeare, All's Well That Ends Well
One enchanting set of 3 astoundingly designed and decorated volumes, containing the works of William Shakespeare. These books were edited by Howard Staunton, illustrated by Sir John Gilbert and engraved by The Brothers Dalziel; the books were published by George Routledge & Sons. The first book also is enriched by a frontispiece of William Shakespeare by E.W. Robinson and H. Robinson.
Howard Staunton, who edited these beautiful volumes, was a chess champion, who invested some of his free time in editing Shakespeares' works. This beautiful edition of books is Stauntons masterpiece: bound in beautiful red/brown pictorial gilt cloth, with many engravings and marmorized book block edges. The condition of the books is good, but with bumps and scratches and tears on the covers and backs, as well as foxing on the first pages of the inner books. The first and third book have loose front pages. This compendium of Shakespeare works contain 38 of his masterpieces, each with beautiful illustrations.
