"The spirit of the world encloses four kinds of spirits, diametrically opposed to charity--the spirit of resentment, spirit of aversion, spirit of jealousy and the spirit of indifference." -Jacques-Benigne Bossuet
A really good copy of this posthumous work by Jacques-Bénigne Bossuet, a famous writer and orator, who became Bishop of Meaux and tutor to the Dauphin, son of Louis XIV. "Messire Jacques-Benigne Bossuet - Deal with free will and concupiscence" - to which the title translates in english, was published in 1742 by David, Clousier, Durand et Damonneville. It contains two treatises, one on free will, the other on concupiscence, which are fundamental questions in Christian philosophy and theology.
The first treatise, composed for the education of the Dauphin, exposes the doctrine of Saint Augustine on human freedom and divine grace, opposing the theses of the Jansenists and Protestants. The second treatise, written later, deals with original sin and its consequences, thematizing how man can resist the temptation of the world through the Love of God.The original binding in full brown calfskin is in good condition, but with rubbing. The text block has red edges and the spine is decorated with raised bands, gilt box decorations and fleurons; it has a gilt title, the fastening is partly split at the top and bottom of the cover and there are some scratches on the leather. The interior condition is good, shows beautiful initials, and richly marbled endpapers.
All in all a theologically very interesting work in a still beautiful and charming shell. An interesting addition to every collection.
